What you’re really saying with that small talk is “I don’t have the nerve to introduce myself so I’m going to ask you the time then cross my fingers.” Most people will pick up what you’re putting down, and if they’re interested, too, they’ll give you a break.
3. Ask for advice. Similarly to making small talk, this is a perfect way to initiate conversation. Ask someone what to order at the cafe or where you should go on vacation. People like to feel helpful. They also like to talk about themselves, so asking for an opinion helps that people talk about their experiences and expertise.
